October is Fall Car Care Month. This month, the National Car Care Council reminds drivers to check their vehicles as we transition to a new season.
Let’s face it, the last thing you’d want is to be stranded and meeting the unexpected expenses of emergency repairs. Whether you perform the inspection on your own or go to the repair shop, a small expenditure of time ensures peace of mind and saves you money in the long run. Please follow the checklist below:
Heating, Wipers & Lights
Your heaters, defrosters, and wipers all need to work as the temperatures start to decrease. Not only are they for your comfortability, but they are also for your safety. As a general rule of thumb, wiper blades should be swapped out every six months. As for your lights, please test to see that all exterior and interior lights operate and headlights are properly aimed.
Tires & Brakes
Before we head into fall, make sure your tire tread depth and tire pressure are up to standards. Though snow and ice are not conditions West Palm Beach residents face, rain is still a possibility. Regardless of the weather conditions, you will need reliable tires that grip properly to the road.
Additionally, it would be best if you had your brakes inspected too. The braking system is the vehicle’s most important safety item, so make sure all parts are in working order.
Oil & Filters
Regardless of the season, you should be diligent about changing the oil and filter at the factory-recommended intervals. Dirty oil can wreak havoc, especially in the cooler months. While you or your mechanic checks the oil filter, make sure you have the fuel, air, and transmission filters looked at too.
Charging & Exhaust Systems
It’s always wise to have your battery tested at the end of summer, or the beginning of fall, as the summer temperatures probably did a number on your battery. Not only should it hold its charge, but you should make sure the battery is free of corrosion.
In addition to a battery test, please have the exhaust system checked for carbon monoxide leaks. This type of leak can be particularly dangerous when driving with the windows closed.
Need assistance on checking these items off? Please bring your BMW or MINI to Motorhaus today for a full fall vehicle inspection. Or give us a call 561-345-2799 if you have any questions or concerns.
